Klug on Aspen: Ski Season is Just Around the Corner - Here's How to Plan for it!

Aspen Snowmass is hands down one of the best ski destinations in the world. The perfect mix of luxury, jaw-dropping mountain scenery, and four unique mountains means there’s something for every skier/snowboarder here. As someone who’s been skiing these slopes for over 20 years and calls Aspen Snowmass home, I’m here to help you plan the ultimate ski trip. Whether it’s your first time or your twentieth, getting the details right can make all the difference. Here’s a guide to help you hit the ground running and make the most of your Aspen Snowmass vacation.

1. Timing Is Everything

Aspen Snowmass offers great skiing from mid-November through early April, but when you visit really depends on what kind of experience you want:

  • Early Season (November-December): Fewer people on the slopes and better deals on lodging, but not all the terrain is guaranteed to be open.
  • Peak Season (Late December-February): If you’re looking for pristine snow and prime skiing conditions, this is it. Expect bigger crowds and higher prices, especially around the holidays.
  • Spring Skiing (March-April): This is one of my favorite times to ski. Longer days, warmer temps, and still great snow—what’s not to love? Plus, the higher elevations hold onto that powder.

2. Pick the Right Terrain

One of the best things about Aspen Snowmass is the variety. With four mountains, there’s something for everyone:

  • Snowmass: It’s the biggest of the bunch and has a little bit of everything. Families especially love it here, with beginner runs, terrain parks, and plenty of intermediate cruisers.
  • Aspen Mountain (Ajax): This one’s for the experts. No beginner runs here, just steep, challenging terrain with stunning views of Aspen. It’s a favorite for advanced skiers who want a real challenge.
  • Aspen Highlands: A local favorite, Highlands is known for its tougher runs and the legendary Highland Bowl. It’s the go-to spot for those looking for fewer crowds and serious skiing.
  • Buttermilk: Perfect for beginners and home to one of the best terrain parks in the world. Whether you’re learning to ski or just want to hit the park, Buttermilk is a great choice.

3. Lodging Options

When it comes to where to stay, Aspen Snowmass has it all. Whether you want a five-star experience or something a bit more low-key, there’s something for everyone:

  • Luxury Resorts and Hotels: If you want the royal treatment, look no further than The Little Nell, The Ritz-Carlton, The Hotel Jerome, or The St. Regis. All are top-notch and offer unbeatable service. For something a bit more modern and family-friendly, the Limelight Hotel is a solid choice.
  • Vacation Rentals: Traveling with a group? Consider a luxury rental that we'd be happy to help you with! We have a wide range of options, and many offer ski-in/ski-out access, so you can maximize your time on the slopes.
  • Ski-in/Ski-out Condos: If convenience is king for you, Snowmass Village has tons of options that let you ski right out your front door.

4. Lift Tickets and Rentals

To get the most bang for your buck, buy your lift tickets online ahead of time. Multi-day passes are the way to go if you’re staying for a while, and if you plan to hit other resorts in the future, the Ikon Pass is worth checking out.

If you’re not bringing your own gear, there are plenty of rental shops to choose from. I recommend reserving in advance, and some shops—like Four Mountain Sports—will even deliver your gear straight to your door.

5. Ski Lessons and Guided Tours

Aspen Snowmass has some of the best ski instructors around, so whether you’re a total beginner or looking to fine-tune your skills, I highly recommend taking a lesson. They’ve got programs for all ages and levels, and the kids' programs are especially great.

For the more advanced skiers, guided tours are a must. You’ll discover secret powder stashes and hidden gems you’d never find on your own. And if you’re up for it, hiking the Highland Bowl with a guide is an unforgettable experience.

6. Off-Mountain Fun

As much as I love snowboarding, there’s a lot more to do in Aspen Snowmass once you’re off the mountain. Here are a few ideas:

  • Relax and Recharge: Treat yourself to a spa day after a tough day on the slopes. A good massage or soak will do wonders. My favorite spa is at the St. Regis.
  • Après-Ski: You can’t skip après in Aspen. Hit up Ajax Tavern or Venga Venga in Snowmass for good vibes, good drinks, and some much-needed refueling.
  • Art & Culture: Take a break from the slopes and check out the Aspen Art Museum or stroll through downtown for some boutique shopping.
  • Snowmobile Tours: For something totally unique, book a snowmobile tour to the Maroon Bells through T-Lazy 7 Ranch. These mountains are some of the most photographed in the country, and they’re even more stunning in winter.

7. Where to Eat and Drink

Aspen has some incredible dining options, from casual to gourmet. For a high-end experience, Element 47 at The Little Nell or Matsuhisa (by Chef Nobu) will blow you away. If you’re after something more laid-back, Public House is a local favorite for craft beer and comfort food.

And once the sun goes down, Aspen’s nightlife kicks off. Check out Belly Up for live music or head to Clark’s Oyster Bar for a more relaxed, cozy vibe.

8. Getting Here and Around

Aspen’s local airport (ASE) is just a short drive from downtown, which makes it super convenient. If you’re flying into Denver, it’s about a four-hour drive, but once you’re in town, there’s really no need for a car. Aspen’s free shuttle system is top-notch and connects all four mountains. Most hotels and condos offer shuttles, too.

Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or both, Aspen Snowmass has it all. As someone who’s spent years snowboarding and living here, I can honestly say this place is special. Plan your trip right, and you’ll see why so many people fall in love with Aspen—it has a way of making you feel like you’re coming home.
