Mid March 2021 In Aspen Snowmass
Happy Friday from Aspen Snowmass! We are expecting the storm of the season this weekend, with feet predicted in the forecast. It should be an epic storm with even better skiing and riding across all four mountains. Besides skiing in the fresh snow, there are plenty of events going on in and around Aspen. Read on for this week’s special events!
The snow is expected to start tomorrow afternoon, Saturday March 13th. The weather should be perfect for an Aspen favorite event, America’s Uphill. This annual race attracts competitors of all types, including snowshoers, telemark skiers, runners, and cross-country skiers. The race starts at 7am, right at the base of the Silver Queen Gondola, ending at the top of Aspen Mountain by noon. This year, racers are asked to mask up and maintain social distancing. Day-of registration at the race start gate is available.
The FIS Ski and Snowboard World Championships are well underway, starting earlier this week. The finals are this weekend over at Buttermilk. Skiers and riders can watch the events from the Summit Express Chairlift. There are no spectators allowed due to the pandemic, but viewers can tune in on the FIS YouTube channel for all final events. This will be the first time since the 1950 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships at Aspen Mountain that Aspen Snowmass will host an FIS World Championship. FIS Skiers and Snowboarders will stay in town for the Land Rover U.S. Grand Prix World Cup slopestyle and halfpipe competitions are to be held March 18th-21st at Buttermilk. This 4-day long event is the first freeski and snowboard Olympic tryout events for Beijing 2022, which was rescheduled from February due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Be sure to keep your eyes out for local freeskier Alex Ferreira!
This weekend is shaping up to be one of the best of the season! Get out and enjoy it! Remember, there will be Bud Light Music on the Mountain on all four mountains, and the spring sale at Four Mountain Sports is underway through next Friday, March 19th. Have a great weekend, and think snow!
